“There is strong demand for two of my most popular courses: Parts Department Profit Management and Service Department Profit Management. When not running courses I am working with many companies across many sectors. With these companies I am working on various systems and strategies to improve the companies’ performance in key areas of business such as customer service, technical staff training and management and staff information systems”.
Jim has been a speaker at the recent Farm Tractor & Machinery Trade Association (FTMTA) seminars that took place around the country and has chaired and spoken at the FTMTA National Conference. The seminars are designed to help members companies survive and prosper in the current economic climate.
“Training courses must be driven by the needs of the learner in relation to the needs of the company. I have always had a passion for my work. I derive as much satisfaction from creating a team that is commercially aware and skilled as I get from increasing sales and margins; the two are fundamentally linked after all. I bring this passion and drive to learners and companies that recognise the benefits that will result from participation in my courses or companies that I work with.”
Jim is a successful angling photo-journalist.” I have been writing for Irish Angler magazine since its launch in 2004. Each month I contribute the “Dinghy Angler” feature which deals with all matters about sea angling from your boat. I have also written features for UK based Sea Angling magazines such as Sea Angler, Boat Fishing Monthly and Total Sea Fishing. I attend the major angling shows in the country as a guest speaker where I generally present to anglers about angling in Ireland, the techniques and the practicalities such as safety awareness in boats. I have a keen interest in the marketing of angling online and the building and maintaining of businesses’ profiles. I have guest lectured on the Marine & Countryside Guides course in the Institute of Technology Tralee. For many years there has been a reliance on UK journalists to promote the business of angling in our country – We have the talent and skills to market ourselves around the world and angling has the potential to help communities prosper in difficult economic times.”
“Passion, drive, interest, success and enjoyment are common themes across all my talks and courses. It is impossible to be successful in training without these elements. My courses and talks have been called infectious! This is important to me but it is not without reason. I believe in setting high standards in terms of course preparation and delivery.”
“Some of the companies I have or am working with: Atkins Farm Machinery, AOS Security Management Solutions, Hyland Security, Mectec, Dennison Trailers, PD Management Consultants, Jim Power Agri Sales, Shamrock Electrical, Abbey Retail, AP Vaughan ,Bella Vista Hotel, …”
History:
After completing a Production Management course in 1987 Jim Clohessy joined truck distributors D. Dennehy Ltd. in Carrigtwohill Co. Cork. From here Jim joined John McCarthy Agri Sales in 2003. After three years in the agri sector Jim decided to set up his own company offering training programmes and consultancy to companies wishing to increase profitability, efficiency and competitiveness.
“For the first few years with D. Dennehy Ltd. I worked within the Service Department where we systematically overhauled the administration system leading to increased profitability and efficiency. In 1991 I moved from the successful Service Department to take over an ailing Parts Department. After an initial period of analysis, we undertook a reorganisation programme. This reorganisation paved the way for D. Dennehy Ltd. to have one of the most successful commercial parts businesses in the country. Within a few short years turnover had increased by 80% with increases in gross and net margins”. During my time with Dennehys I have had dealings with many O.E. manufacturers: Hino, Iveco, Man, Isuzu, Mercedes, Arvin Meritor,BPW, Haldex, Wabco, Dennison, SDC and others. We developed complementary lines of business to our core truck activities. We gained considerable market share in the trailer sector both in spare parts and service.
In tandem with the creation of a procedure based parts system Jim was intimately involved with the upgrading of the Company’s computer systems. From the outset Jim had an interest in computers, recognising the PC as a tool that was going to revolutionise the way we would conduct business in the nineties and onwards. Jim was involved with the specification and development of the “Fortuna” computer system, one of the most popular Motor Dealer packages in the country. Jim has delivered many courses in basic computing skills to FAS trainees as well as training in specific applications to managers and staff requiring computer-based solutions to everyday problems.
In 2003 Jim left D. Dennehy Ltd. and took a position with John McCarthy Agri Sales. Jim was tasked with the overhaul of a parts department struggling to make money. Within a relatively short time, after implementing procedure based control systems, the parts department was trading as a profitable division within the company.
“It was here within the agri sector that I realised that the same serious training gap exists for personnel as exists in other branches of the motor industry. I realised that there is an opportunity for me to provide courses to industry based on proven techniques and common sense”
In 2006 Jim left McCarthy Agri Sales in order to develop training programmes to suit the motor industry. Interest to-date has shown that these courses cross over into all sectors where good stock control practices and awareness of profit margins are crucial to the success of the enterprise.
